Common Signs and Symptoms of Depression

While everyone experiences depression a little bit differently, here are some of the common symptoms of depression in highly functioning individuals:

  • Irritability

  • Feeling lazy, even though knowing you cannot take on more

  • Worthlessness

  • Desire to withdraw from social events

  • Fatigue: tired all the time even if you sleep

  • Feeling overly guilty

  • Prolonged sadness

  • Low self-esteem

  • A feeling of being stuck

  • Crying for no reason

  • Not sleeping or sleeping too much

  • Feelings of being overwhelmed

What is Depression?

Feeling down, sad, or just "blah" is a normal part of life. Usually this form of the blues doesn't last long and with some thought or a conversation with a good friend we can figure out what brought the feeling on. Often, it's loss, disappointment, or some reminder of this sort of experience that triggers it. Just as often, it only takes doing something pleasurable, thinking of something else, talking to a friend, etc. for the feeling to lessen or go away.

But if these feelings stick around for more than two weeks and are linked with other cues, such as those listed below, then it could be that this normal sad feeling is evolving into something more significant and serious.

Physical

  • Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"

  • Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping

  • Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain

  • Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain

Behavioral/Attitude

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions

  • Restlessness, irritability, anger

Emotional

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood

  • Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness

My Approach to Depression Treatment in Florida:

I use Cognitive Behavioral Strategies (CBT) to identify the intrusive thought patterns that lead to a low mood. CBT is defined by moving towards positive action steps to counteract and interrupt negative thought cycles.

Additionally, I utilize a systems-based approach to identify the contextual factors within a clients’ environment that are impacting unhealthy functioning. Finally, if you are dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of a baby, that’s something I can help with too. Check out my postpartum support page to see how.

We can work together to help you cope with the stress and anxiety that accompany depression.

  • Develop techniques that help you decrease and stop worry-filled thoughts

  • Learn breathing and relaxation techniques to assist you in calming your nervous system

  • Receive emotional support in a non-judging, fully accepting, safe relationship
